Open water

Above the sea floor, the tiniest and the largest species swim and drift. Here, zooplankton and photosynthetic phytoplankton form the basis of many food webs that support predators in the open and on the sea floor. Some animals migrate long distances to breeding grounds. Others ascend and descend at different times of day, using darkness to avoid predators.
