General Description
Flat bladed alga with irregular divided branching which arises as a split in an existing blade at the tip (apicial). Blades are mostly straight with some pointed side branches (laterals). Blade tips are fan-shaped and sometimes twisted. Holdfast at base is felty, matted and root-like (rhizoidal). Dark brown. Up to 15 cm long (thallus).
Biology
This is one of several thin, flat-bladed algae that are difficult to distinguish.
Habitat
Tidal pools and subtidal rocky reefs with moderate-rough wave action, to depth of 22 m.
