Small, slender fishes with a terminal mouth, two separate dorsal fins, medium to large eyes and cycloid scales; pelvic fins usually abdominal, pectoral fins may be high on the body.

Family level detail.
Hardyheads are small, slender silvery fishes found worldwide in tropical and temperate coastal waters including estuaries. Some species live in freshwater. They have two widely separated dorsal fins, pectoral fins high on the body, a forked tail, cycloid scales and a broad silvery stripe along the side.

General Description

Body long, slender, tail base slender; mouth large, very protrusible; jaws reaching beyond front of eye, jaw teeth minute or absent; pelvic fin tips extend beyond anus. Translucent, silvery yellow or green, midlateral stripe broad, silvery, dark or reddish, snout and top of head with fine dark speckles. To 12 cm.

Biology

This species commonly moves to deeper water during the day, returning at night to feed in the shallows.
