General Description
Head and body strongly compressed, eyes close together, snout rounded; males develop a large mouth. Pale brown, with dark mottling above with 5-6 dark brown bands on middle to lower sides, belly pale; first dorsal with diagonal stripes. To 5 cm.
Biology
This species is rare in Port Phillip Bay, Victoria, being more common in eastern areas such as Gippsland Lakes.
Habitat
Usually in seagrass beds in estuaries and coastal lakes but sometimes found in lower freshwater reaches of rivers, in depths of 0-10 m.
