General Description
Body elongate, robust; head robust, flat on top; mouth directed upwards when closed; scales absent from most of head; front of pectoral-fin base scaled. Sandy coloured; densely covered with small, irregular brownish to golden markings above, paler below. To 12 cm.
Biology
These fishes bury in sand leaving only eyes exposed to escape predation and await prey. Cirri prevent sand entering mouth and gill cavities while the fish is buried.
Habitat
On soft sediments in bays and along the coast, in depths of 3-18 m.
