View scientific description and taxonomy

Scientific Details

Top of body (bell) has eight rounded lobes, each lobe with a cleft in the middle. In the centre of each lobe is a sense organ. Bell much thicker in middle than at edges. Arms purple throughout, bell deep reddish brown (may be clear in small specimens). Tentacles numerous, long and fine. Tentacles arising from 8 horse-shoe shaped clusters from the under surface of the bell. Bell generally up to -25cm across but may reach up to 1 m. Cyanea annaskala was previously incorrectly called Cyanea capillata (Linaeus, 1785). A comprehensive study investigating DNA and morphology of Cyanea species, revealed that Australia has two species - Cyanea rosea Quoy & Gaimard (NSW) and Cyanea annaskala (south-eastern Australia). These both differ from Cyanea capillata which is found in the northern hemisphere.
